Two troll figures emerge within a dark forest setting, where muted colour, heavy forms and silence create the feeling of an old story caught in a single moment.

In short: a Swedish folklore art print with classic John Bauer atmosphere, ideal for lovers of trolls, Nordic forests, fantasy illustration and Scandinavian storybook art.

John Bauer Two Trolls Poster

John Bauer (1882–1918) is closely associated with the forests, trolls and fairy-tale creatures that filled Swedish illustrated books in the early twentieth century. His art often treats the forest as more than a backdrop: trunks, rocks, moss and shadow become part of the character of the scene.

Two Trolls, dated 1909, is held in the collection of Göteborgs konstmuseum. The work belongs to the period when Bauer was developing the visual language that would make his trolls instantly recognisable: oversized bodies, heavy silhouettes, expressive faces and a close connection to the surrounding landscape.

“A good Scandinavian art print should grow richer the longer you live with it.”

— Hygge by Scandinavia

That quality suits Bauer particularly well. His pictures can feel playful at first glance, but the longer you look, the more the forest seems to take over. The trolls appear ancient, curious and slightly melancholy, as if they belong to a world that existed long before the viewer arrived.

Artwork and Product Details

Artwork

Two Trolls

Artist

John Bauer (1882–1918)

Date

1909

Collection

Göteborgs konstmuseum

Theme

Swedish folklore, trolls and Nordic forest atmosphere

Print

Premium matte art print

Frame

Not included

Available Sizes

25 × 25 cm

10 × 10 in

30 × 30 cm

12 × 12 in

35 × 35 cm

14 × 14 in

40 × 40 cm

16 × 16 in

45 × 45 cm

18 × 18 in

50 × 50 cm

20 × 20 in

70 × 70 cm

28 × 28 in

A Nordic Forest Print with Storybook Character

The square composition works especially well in reading corners, bedrooms, studies and gallery walls.
