Waiting at the edge of modernity

Roads, railway lines, gates and thresholds recur throughout L.A. Ring’s work. They gave him a way to paint recognisable Danish places while exploring moments of hesitation, departure and change.

In this scene from Hedehusene, a man on a bicycle has been stopped at the crossing where Roskilde Road meets the Copenhagen to Roskilde railway. The diagonal lines of the road, tracks and barrier create tension across the composition. The train itself remains beyond the central action, leaving the waiting cyclist and the crossing as the real subject.

The railway had a personal connection for Ring. As a boy, he experienced a new railway line being constructed through his family’s land in the village of Ring. He later returned several times to railway crossings and the meeting between rural life and modern technology. The Danish Railway Museum provides more information about Ring’s railway paintings.

“It takes heart to love the face of reality.”
