A quiet moment beside an old mirror

A young woman sits in the warm interior of a timber cabin, absorbed by the reflection in a small, gilded mirror. Another figure beside her becomes part of the painting’s carefully balanced arrangement of bodies, furniture and light.

The scene feels private and unhurried. Red hair ribbons glow against the darker wood, while the mirror’s narrow gold frame catches the light. Zorn allows large areas to remain in shadow, giving the illuminated skin and small flashes of colour greater intensity.

Painted at Gopsmor

Zorn created Gammal spegel at Gopsmor, his secluded retreat near the Dalälven river outside Mora. The historic log buildings offered him a setting where traditional Dalarna life, old interiors and the changing Nordic light could become part of his art.

He often worked there during winter and shortly before midsummer. Many of his Gopsmor paintings show models inside the cabins, where light entered through small windows and mingled with the warm glow of an unseen fire.

Light, colour and composition

The diagonal table guides the eye into the room, while the figures echo one another through their curves and gestures. This clear construction gives the painting a quiet sense of order beneath its loose, energetic brushwork.

Zorn’s colour range is restrained, yet the result is rich. Brown timber, muted skin tones and deep shadows are enlivened by coral-red ribbons and the glimmering frame of the mirror. The different light sources make the room feel tangible and warm.

When the painting was shown at the opening exhibition of Liljevalchs Konsthall in Stockholm in 1916, it attracted considerable admiration. It was later part of the noted collection of Swedish art assembled by Axel Jacobsen and is now privately owned.

About Anders Zorn

Anders Zorn was born in Mora, Dalarna, in 1860. After studying at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, he established an international career as a watercolourist, painter, portraitist and etcher.

His sitters included European cultural figures and three American presidents. After returning permanently to Mora in 1896, he devoted increasing attention to the people, customs and interiors of his native Dalarna. Learn more about the artist through the Zorn Museum.
