Twelve years of work on nine woodcut sheets
Olaus Magnus worked on the map for around twelve years before it was printed in Venice. Its nine sheets form an unusually detailed picture of Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Finland, Iceland and the surrounding seas. The map is both geographical record and visual storytelling, making it rewarding to explore from across the room and up close.
“It was the first map that depicted the Nordic countries more or less correctly.”
