Norway’s national day through Munch’s eyes

The 17th of May commemorates the signing of the Norwegian Constitution in 1814. Munch approaches the celebration as a living street scene rather than a formal historical picture. People gather beneath Norwegian flags, and the town appears to move with the crowd.

The strong reds, blues and greens bring energy to the composition. Figures and buildings are simplified, allowing colour and rhythm to carry much of the atmosphere. It is a recognisably Norwegian scene seen through the language of modern painting.

The original Norwegian title is 17de mai i en norsk småby. The painting belongs to MUNCH in Oslo. The museum describes Munch as “one of Modernism’s most significant artists.”
