A private conversation in the Telemark countryside

Two young women stand beside a wooden fence, absorbed in conversation. Their closeness suggests that something personal is being shared, although Werenskiold leaves the subject of their conversation unexplained.

The painting was created at Gvarv in Telemark during the summer of 1883. The view is from Lindheim Farm, where Werenskiold and his family stayed. He produced several versions of the motif, including compositions with a single figure.

A study in green

Green dominates the landscape, moving from the bright grass in the foreground to the trees and the darker blue-green hillside. The variations keep the large areas of vegetation lively and give the scene depth.

The fence cuts diagonally into the picture and leads the eye towards the figures and the distant landscape. Its firm geometry adds movement to an otherwise calm scene.

The painting was regarded as highly modern when it appeared at the Autumn Exhibition in 1883. Werenskiold gave the two figures a simple, monumental presence while retaining the recognisable details of rural life.

The women’s regional clothing connects the scene with Telemark. Werenskiold’s interest in local landscapes and everyday life helped renew Norwegian folk-life painting during the 1880s.

About Erik Werenskiold

Erik Werenskiold was born in Vinger in 1855. He studied in Munich and encountered French naturalist painting before turning his attention towards Norwegian landscapes, people and outdoor light.

He became one of Norway’s leading naturalist painters and was also celebrated for his illustrations of Norwegian folk tales and Snorri’s sagas. Werenskiold died in Bærum in 1938.
