A Norwegian river landscape by Frits Thaulow
Frits Thaulow was one of the leading Norwegian artists of the late nineteenth century and an important figure in Norwegian naturalism. He became especially admired for landscapes in which water, reflections and changing light shape the entire atmosphere.
In A River, the water leads the eye through a landscape of trees, distant hills and softly coloured vegetation. Thaulow contrasts the deep blue-green river with brighter reflections and warm autumn tones, creating a scene that feels both natural and carefully composed.

The original work is a pastel on canvas and belongs to the collection of the State Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg. Its delicate transitions between water, sky and vegetation demonstrate the sensitive use of colour for which Thaulow became known.
