Two colours and two principles

No. 8 is the fourth and final painting in the group devoted to adulthood. Its spacious arrangement is calmer than the dense fields of letters and signs in the preceding paintings, while rounded shapes suggest cells, seeds, flowers or celestial bodies.

Moderna Museet identifies the meeting of blue and yellow as central to the painting. Within Hilma af Klint’s visual vocabulary, blue was associated with the female principle and yellow with the male. Their interaction reflects her recurring interest in balance, connection and unity.

“In the fourth and final painting the interplay between the blue and the yellow, that is the male and the female principle, is central.”
