The vesica piscis and the idea of unity
No. 9 is the first of two paintings devoted to old age. Two spirals anchor the lower part of the image, followed by seed-like forms that may represent wheat kernels. Above them, intersecting yellow and blue circles create an almond-shaped figure known as a vesica piscis.
Moderna Museet describes this form as an ancient symbol of progression towards unity and completion. At the top of the painting, two diagram-like flowers carry yellow and blue outer circles. Hilma af Klint later wrote that the painting concerned a divinity incorporating both the male and female principles.
