A family gathered around the Christmas tree
A man and several children hold hands as they dance around the decorated tree. Their movement gives the scene a cheerful rhythm, while a woman enters carrying a dish filled with red apples.
The open fireplace, candles and richly furnished room create an intimate setting. Nyström includes small details in the clothing, decorations and furniture that make the illustration feel like a glimpse into a Swedish Christmas celebration from another time.
Swedish Christmas customs in pictures
Dancing and singing around the Christmas tree became an important part of Scandinavian Christmas celebrations. In Nyström’s illustration, the custom is presented as a family activity in which children and adults share the same space and excitement.
The apples refer to a time when fruit, sweets and handmade decorations were closely associated with Christmas. Together with the fire and candlelight, they add bright points of red and gold to the darker interior.
“I have always loved children.”
