A Danish landscape painted at Brorfelde
Lundbye painted this small oil study during a summer visit to Brorfelde on Zealand. Danish Golden Age artists often worked more freely when painting outdoors, while using their studies as preparation for carefully composed studio paintings.
Here, Lundbye arranged the hills, pond, cattle and road along a broad, reversed S-shaped movement. It guides the eye from the animals in the foreground towards the distant countryside. He hoped to develop the subject as a larger painting, but the planned version was never completed.
“Deeply fascinated by the hilly landscape around Brorfelde.”
The area’s contrast between exposed hills and sheltered villages inspired several of Lundbye’s finest landscape works.
