A Summer Day in Kristiania
When Haldorsen painted the scene in 1907, Oslo was officially named Kristiania. The city returned to the name Oslo on 1 January 1925, as explained by Store norske leksikon.
The University’s classical façade stands prominently on the left, while Karl Johans gate leads into the centre of the composition. Studenterlunden provides a band of trees and greenery on the right. Small figures, carriages and flags turn the architectural view into a record of everyday city life.
Haldorsen painted the scene from an elevated viewpoint, allowing the street, park and surrounding buildings to unfold across the canvas. Sunlit façades are balanced by deep green shadows and a broad blue sky, giving the painting a distinctly summery Oslo atmosphere.
“The city feels lived in here: sunlight on stone, figures on the pavement and Oslo opening towards the horizon.”

About Karl Haldorsen
Karl Anton Haldorsen was born in Namsos in 1878 and died in Kristiania in 1911. He studied at the Royal Drawing School under Wilhelm Peters and Oscar Wergeland and was briefly a pupil of Erik Werenskiold.
Haldorsen exhibited regularly at Norway’s Autumn Exhibition during the first decade of the twentieth century. His surviving works include landscapes, portraits, an artist’s studio interior and this unusual view of central Oslo. Read more in the Norsk kunstnerleksikon entry on Karl Haldorsen.
Historic Oslo Art for the Home
The soft blue sky, warm stone façades and rich green trees work naturally with oak furniture, neutral walls and classic Scandinavian interiors. The city scene has enough detail to reward close viewing while retaining a calm, open composition from a distance.
