A fox caught in the wilderness
The fox appears low among rocks, roots and dry vegetation. Its warm reddish coat immediately draws the eye, standing out against the landscape’s muted brown, green and grey tones.
Several figures gather higher in the terrain, partly framed by trees and uneven rock formations. Their elevated position creates distance from the trapped animal and gives the scene the character of a story already in progress.
A landscape filled with tension
Zoll uses the rugged terrain to guide the eye across the picture. A broad rocky foreground leads towards the fox and then upwards to the figures, trees and cloudy sky.
The open view on the left contrasts with the darker woodland on the right. Changing light across the rocks and clouds gives the landscape depth, while the small scale of the figures makes the surrounding wilderness feel expansive.
“Zoll concentrated on scenes of folk life, combining modest subjects with a strong sense of colour.”
About Kilian Zoll
Kilian Christoffer Zoll was born in 1818 and studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. During the 1850s, he worked in Düsseldorf and collaborated with the Swedish landscape painter Marcus Larson.
Zoll became particularly associated with scenes of Swedish folk life. His paintings often combine modest everyday subjects, lively storytelling and a strong feeling for colour. Fox Caught in a Trap brings this narrative approach into a wild and rocky landscape.
