Summer evening on the Skagen coast

Krøyer was a central figure among the Skagen Painters, an artists’ community drawn to the light and landscape of northern Denmark. In this painting, the boys form a gentle diagonal through the foreground while ships appear on the distant horizon.

The restrained blue palette gives the scene its distinctive calm. Reflections and soft transitions connect the figures, beach and sea, creating a coastal image that feels both immediate and dreamlike.

The Danish title is Badende drenge en sommeraften ved Skagens strand. The painting belongs to SMK – The National Gallery of Denmark, where it is registered as KMS1658. SMK describes its dreamlike blue as “the blue colour of hope.”
