Details

A summer walk along the shore, painted in the clear light of Skagen.

In A Stroll on the Beach, originally titled En strandpromenade, Michael Ancher depicts a group of elegantly dressed women walking beside the sea. The broad shoreline, pale dresses and distant horizon give the 1896 painting an unusual feeling of openness and gentle movement.

The horizontal composition allows the eye to follow the figures across the beach. Small variations in posture and colour create a natural rhythm, while the sea and sky provide the restrained coastal atmosphere associated with the Skagen Painters.

Summer life in Skagen

Michael Ancher settled in Skagen and became one of the central members of the artists’ colony. He is particularly known for his direct portrayals of fishermen and life beside the North Sea. In this painting, he turns his attention to the quieter social life of the beach.

Ancher later recalled his close contact with the local community: “We soon got to know the fishermen.” The quotation is reproduced by Bruun Rasmussen.

The original is an oil painting from 1896 measuring 69 × 161 cm. It belongs to Skagens Museum. See the museum record and high-resolution image at Google Arts & Culture.
