Denmark, Sweden and the wider Scandinavian region appear through the eyes of a French cartographer in this detailed map from 1648.
Scandinavie ou sont les Estats de Danemark, de Suede &c. was created by Nicolas Sanson and published in Paris as part of his geographical work L’Europe. The French title translates approximately as Scandinavia, where the states of Denmark, Sweden and others are found.
The copper engraving was made by Abraham Peyrounin. Coloured outlines define the political divisions, while towns, villages, rivers and mountain ranges fill the landscape. Relief is shown pictorially, giving the terrain the distinctive character of 17th-century cartography.
The map reflects a period when geography, royal administration and political power were closely connected. Sanson held the title of geographer to the French king, and his maps helped establish Paris as an important centre of European mapmaking.
The catalogue of the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection describes the map as showing “political divisions, major cities, towns, villages, rivers, mountains” and drainage.
