Firelight in the Jølster landscape
The large bonfire at Sandalstrand forms the centre of the composition. A solitary figure appears as a dark silhouette against the flames, while other villagers gather on the hillside for conversation and summer courtship. The mountain Kollen rises behind them.
Astrup returned to his home region of Jølster in 1902. Its landscape, people and local customs became central to his work. In this painting, close observation is combined with a dreamlike atmosphere created by fire, darkness and the pale northern summer night.
Nasjonalmuseet describes Astrup’s art as “inextricably linked to the nature and people of Jølster.”
Jonsok is a Norwegian name for the midsummer celebration associated with Saint John’s Eve. Bonfires, outdoor gatherings and seasonal traditions are central to the occasion.
