A theatrical deathbed scene

A pale young man lies surrounded by mourners. One figure hides his face in a handkerchief, while three women lean towards the dying man. Their stylised gestures give the scene the character of a carefully staged performance.

The dandy holds a dark mirror close to his face. This unusual detail introduces vanity, identity and self-observation into a scene traditionally associated with prayer and solemn reflection. Dardel leaves the meaning open, allowing sadness, beauty and irony to occupy the same picture.

Colour, rhythm and ambiguity

The painting is built from sweeping outlines, flattened shapes and bold areas of colour. The figures seem to bend with the rhythm of the composition, while the patterned setting adds to its dreamlike atmosphere.

Dardel drew inspiration from French modernism, late nineteenth-century Symbolism and decorative art. His figurative style remained strongly personal. Stories, private experiences and theatrical fantasy often meet in pictures that resist a single interpretation.

“His works are ambiguous; a seemingly banal and innocuous trait can suddenly swing into its diametrical opposite.”

About Nils Dardel

Nils Dardel was born in Bettna, Sweden, in 1888. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm from 1908 to 1910 before moving to Paris, where he encountered Cubism and other currents within the European avant-garde.

He became known for portraits and narrative paintings filled with strong colours, stylised bodies and psychological tension. Dardel also worked with the Ballets Suédois and helped collector Rolf de Maré build an important collection of modern art. He died in New York in 1943.

Swedish modernism for an expressive interior

The strong colours and horizontal composition give the poster a noticeable presence in a living room, bedroom, dining area or creative workspace. It pairs well with dark wood, coloured walls and interiors where art is allowed to set the mood.
