Fresh spring foliage, mirrored water and sunlight moving through a Danish forest.
In A Spring Day in the Forest at Sæby Å, Peder Mørk Mønsted follows the river through dense woodland near Sæby in northern Jutland. The elongated composition leads the eye between trees, reflections and small patches of open sky.
Painted in 1896, the scene shows Mønsted’s remarkable command of natural detail. Leaves, branches and reflections are carefully observed, yet the painting retains the quiet atmosphere that made his Danish landscapes so distinctive.
Mønsted became especially known for Scandinavian forests and streams. Bonhams cites the Danish artists’ dictionary Weilbach, which describes his characteristic subjects as “still water, trees and forest”.
Why this print stands out
- Sunlight filtering naturally through dense spring foliage
- Detailed reflections that add depth to the woodland scene
- Soft greens suited to calm Scandinavian interiors
- A horizontal composition that works particularly well above a sofa, bed or sideboard
- Available framed or unframed in five sizes
