Still water, dense summer foliage and sunlight filtering through the trees.
In Parti fra Sæby Å, or By the Sæby River, Danish landscape painter Peder Mørk Mønsted depicts a quiet river running through the lush woodland near Sæby in northern Jutland. Reflections transform the water into a second landscape and give the scene its remarkable depth and tranquillity.
Mønsted repeatedly returned to forests, rivers and quiet waters. His precise observation of light and vegetation made him one of Denmark’s most accomplished naturalistic landscape painters. Bonhams cites the Danish artists’ dictionary Weilbach, which notes his preference for motifs featuring “still water, trees and forest”.
