The blue hour at Skagen

Krøyer found the idea for the painting after a dinner gathering in Skagen in 1892. The guests walked to the beach to enjoy the summer evening, and Anna Ancher and Marie Krøyer continued together along the shoreline.

The pale dresses and figures stand against a nearly continuous field of blue. Sea, sand and sky are joined by the soft twilight, while the women’s measured pace gives the scene its quiet rhythm.

The original Danish title is Sommeraften på Skagen Sønderstrand. The painting belongs to Skagens Museum, which calls it “an eminent example of the period’s mood painting.”
