A Distant Palace in the Mist

The figure in the foreground is Halvor, the hero of the Norwegian folktale Soria Moria Palace. Seen from behind, he pauses above a misty valley and looks towards the palace where a princess is being held by a troll.

Kittelsen leaves an enormous visual distance between Halvor and the palace. The glowing destination appears close enough to see, yet difficult to reach. This sense of distance allows the painting to work as both a fairy-tale scene and an image of ambition, perseverance and uncertain journeys.

The painting belongs to a series of twelve works created in 1900. The series was acquired by Norway’s National Gallery that same year, and the images were later published as an illustrated book in 1911.
