A Norwegian national icon

The wedding party travels across calm water in decorated rowing boats. The bride sits in the leading vessel, surrounded by guests in traditional clothing, while musicians accompany the procession. Behind them rises an idealised vision of Western Norway, framed by mountains, fjord and summer light.

Tidemand specialised in Norwegian people, customs and rural life. Gude was a landscape painter with a remarkable ability to create depth, atmosphere and monumental natural scenery. Their collaboration united the human ceremony with a landscape that feels inseparable from the story.

The setting resembles Hardanger, although the painting does not reproduce one particular view. Gude assembled the landscape from careful observations made in several parts of Norway. This approach allowed the artists to create an ideal image of Norwegian nature and national identity.

Painted several decades after Norway adopted its constitution in 1814, the work belongs to a period when artists helped define how the young nation understood its history, landscape and traditions. Its popularity spread through graphic reproductions, theatre tableaux, ballet, poetry and music.

“This motif has been revered as an ‘icon’ by generations of Norwegians.”
