Summer light over Borre Sø
The painting looks across Borre Sø from the area around Holten and Svejbæk towards Karoline Amalies Høj. Mønsted places the viewer on a narrow path above the water, surrounded by heather, wild grasses and low vegetation. Sheep graze on the slope, while the lake opens towards wooded hills and small islands.
The sky occupies much of the composition. Clouds, blue openings and warm sunlight are repeated in the water below, giving the landscape an unusual sense of space. Mønsted’s close observation of plants and reflections anchors the view in a recognisable Danish setting, while the winding path draws the eye deeper into the landscape.
Borre Sø lies near Sejs and Svejbæk between Brassø and Julsø, in the landscape shaped by the Gudenå River. You can read more about Borre Sø and the Danish Lake District at VisitAarhus.
“His Danish landscapes reveal a nuanced observation of nature and a strong feeling for changing conditions of light and colour.”

A Danish lakescape for the home
The long view across water and hills creates depth on the wall and works especially well in a living room, dining area, bedroom or home office. Its greens, soft blues and warm heather tones pair naturally with oak, linen and calm neutral colours.
