Winter Day in Charlottenlund Forest, Peder Mørk Mønsted, 1918

Low winter sunlight breaks through the trees of Charlottenlund Forest in this Danish landscape painted by Peder Mørk Mønsted in 1918. The contrast between the cold forest floor and the golden sun gives the painting its distinctive atmosphere.

Winter sunlight beneath the trees

Mønsted places the viewer directly on a snow-covered route through the forest. Tracks and footprints cross the foreground before disappearing among the trees. The low sun is partly concealed behind a large trunk, allowing its warm light to spread through the branches and across the snow.

The scene is built from contrasts. Dark trunks stand against pale snow, cool shadows meet yellow sunlight, and the tightly grouped trees open towards a brighter space in the distance. Small changes in colour prevent the snow from appearing uniformly white. Cream, pale blue, violet and reflected gold give the surface depth.

Charlottenlund Forest near Copenhagen

Charlottenlund Forest lies north of Copenhagen in Gentofte. The woodland was once part of Ibstrup Deer Park, established by King Christian IV in 1622. In 1730, King Christian VI gave the forest to his sister Charlotte Amalie, whose name it has carried ever since.

“Until about 1825, the area was an open oak woodland, particularly known for its rich plant life.”

Danish winter art for the home
