Midsummer in Rättvik
A large group of people has assembled beneath the bright summer sky. Couples and children join the dance, while other villagers watch from the edge of the gathering. Traditional clothing adds patches of red, blue, black and white to the green landscape.
The decorated pole forms the centre of the celebration. Rättvik Church and the surrounding countryside place the scene in Dalarna, a region closely associated with Swedish folk traditions.
A study of movement and community
The original painting is small, measuring only 31.5 × 41 centimetres. Zoll nevertheless fills it with figures, gestures and shifting groups. The dancers create a circular movement that draws the eye through the entire composition.
Nationalmuseum describes the work as an oil study. Its direct brushwork and lively figures give the scene a spontaneous character, as though the artist had captured a brief moment during the festivities.

About Kilian Zoll
Kilian Christoffer Zoll was born in Hyllie in southern Sweden in 1818. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
During the 1850s, Zoll worked in Düsseldorf, where narrative genre painting had a strong influence on Scandinavian artists. He specialised in scenes of rural life, combining modest everyday subjects with vivid colour and an often anecdotal approach. He also produced portraits, drawings and graphic works.
