A quiet coast beneath a wide sky

The landscape opens from a dark, rocky foreground towards a calm stretch of water. Low hills and coastal formations recede into the distance, while the broad sky fills much of the small original painting.

Hertervig uses light to unite the separate elements. Pale clouds and distant blue-grey tones soften the horizon, while the darker rocks give the foreground weight and texture.

Nature observed and remembered

Hertervig grew up on Borgøya in Tysvær and retained a close connection to the coastal landscape of Rogaland. Trees, rocks, clouds and sheltered stretches of water remained central to his art throughout his life.

Coastal Landscape belongs to his early period, when his training in Düsseldorf was still visible in the careful construction of the scene. The unusual clarity and glowing atmosphere already point towards the personal landscapes for which he later became known.

A small painting with a broad horizon

The original measures only 22.5 × 31.5 centimetres. Hertervig nevertheless creates a strong sense of distance by placing solid rocks close to the viewer and opening the view towards water, hills and sky.

The painting was executed in oil on a wooden panel. The firm surface suited detailed brushwork and helped preserve the crisp transitions between stone, vegetation, water and clouds.

Light in Hertervig’s landscapes

Light became the defining element of Hertervig’s art. His landscapes often appear hazy, luminous and slightly dreamlike, even when their rocks, trees and coastlines are based on close observation.

In this early work, the effect is restrained. The quiet water and bright distance give the coastal scene a stillness that separates it from the darker, more theatrical landscapes associated with the Düsseldorf school.

About Lars Hertervig

Lars Hertervig was born on Borgøya in Tysvær in 1830. After training as a decorative painter in Stavanger, he studied at the Royal Drawing School in Christiania and later travelled to Düsseldorf, where he became a private student of Hans Gude.

Hertervig returned to the Stavanger region in 1854. Working largely outside the professional art world, he gradually developed a highly personal approach to landscape painting. His importance was fully recognised after his death, particularly through the Norwegian Jubilee Exhibition of 1914.
