Danish history framed by the landscape

The painting was created as part of a decorative project for the Copenhagen home of Skovgaard’s uncle, Kristian Aggersborg. Skovgaard and his friend Johan Thomas Lundbye produced a group of large wall paintings showing well-known historic buildings surrounded by characteristic Danish landscapes.

Skovgaard chose the old church at Højerup, standing close to the edge of Stevns Cliff. The church, sea and chalk cliffs form a scene where architecture and nature carry equal weight. The composition reflects the growing interest among Danish Golden Age artists in presenting the country’s landscape as part of its national history.

The painting also preserves the church as it appeared long before a major cliff collapse in 1928 caused the choir to fall into the sea. The remaining building was secured and still stands at the edge of Stevns Cliff today. VisitDenmark provides more information about Højerup Old Church and its history.

“P.C. Skovgaard is known as a painter who captures something particularly Danish in his landscape paintings.”
