A view of Sæby in 1915
Mønsted looks towards the town from the surrounding fields. A narrow path curves through the foreground beside calm water, leading the eye towards the white church tower. Red roofs, trees and small buildings form a low skyline beneath the bright summer sky.
The painting also records Sæby’s relationship with the sea. Masts appear on the left, close to the harbor, while smoke rises from buildings near the town. These details place the peaceful rural foreground beside a working coastal community.
Mønsted signed, dated and located the painting in the lower-left corner: P. Mønsted, Sæby, 1915. The inscription confirms that he painted the scene during a visit to the town.
The historic coastal town of Sæby
Sæby lies on the Kattegat coast of northern Jutland. The town developed around Sæby River and its harbor, receiving market-town privileges in 1524. The church visible in the painting is Sæby Church, also known as the Church of Our Lady, whose history reaches back to a Carmelite monastery founded during the 15th century.
“The town’s oldest and well-preserved district lies around Algade and Strandgade along the Sæby River.”

A Danish townscape for the home
The horizontal composition creates a broad view across the landscape and works well above a sofa, sideboard, bed or dining table. Its pale sky, natural greens and warm red roofs pair easily with oak, linen and neutral interior colors.
