A cloud above the Swedish countryside
A narrow road leads through a gap between two rounded hills. Above them rises a large white cloud against the blue sky, dominating the composition while casting a quiet presence over the landscape.
The foreground is built from deep green vegetation and softly curving forms. The bright road draws the eye towards the horizon, where the cloud seems both distant and unusually close.
A landscape shaped by atmosphere
Prince Eugen was interested in the emotional character of landscape. In The Cloud, the countryside is simplified into a few strong elements: the road, the hills and the expansive sky.
The painting was created during the artist’s summers at Tyresö, south of Stockholm. The area’s lakes, forests and open fields became an important source of inspiration for his landscape paintings during the 1890s.

Several versions of The Cloud
Prince Eugen returned to the cloud motif several times. Four versions are known, including the painting from 1895 in the collection of the Gothenburg Museum of Art and another version from 1896 at Prins Eugens Waldemarsudde.
The repeated motif shows how carefully he studied changing skies and their effect on the surrounding landscape. The cloud became a central subject rather than a background detail.
About Prince Eugen
Prince Eugen Napoleon Nicolaus was born at Drottningholm Palace in 1865 as the youngest son of King Oscar II and Queen Sophia. He studied art in Paris between 1887 and 1889 under artists including Léon Bonnat and Pierre Puvis de Chavannes.
He developed into one of Sweden’s leading landscape painters and was also an important art collector and supporter of Swedish cultural life. His home at Waldemarsudde became a public art museum after his death in 1947.
