Fishermen gathered in a Skagen merchant’s shop
In the dim interior of the shop, fishermen sit and stand among barrels, shelves and everyday goods. A pipe-smoking fisherman looks directly towards Krøyer, creating a striking connection between the painted scene, the artist and the viewer.
The Danish title, I Købmandens Bod, når der ikke fiskes, explains why the men have gathered indoors. When wind and weather prevented them from going to sea, the merchant’s shop became a place to rest, talk and conduct business.
Krøyer painted the work in 1882, the year he first visited Skagen. The meeting marked the beginning of his lifelong relationship with the fishing town and the artists who gathered there. Unlike his later paintings of luminous beaches and summer evenings, this work focuses on the harsher realities and quieter rhythms of local life.
The painting also reflects the ideas of the Modern Breakthrough, when artists and writers increasingly turned their attention towards contemporary society, working people and everyday experience.
“The local fishermen take a break in the merchant’s shop, while a pipe-smoking fisherman meets P.S. Krøyer’s gaze.”
