A celebration among the Skagen Painters
The gathering takes place in the garden of Anna and Michael Ancher’s home in Skagen. Around the table are Martha and Viggo Johansen, Christian Krohg, P.S. Krøyer, Degn Brøndum, Michael Ancher, Oscar Björck, Thorvald Niss, Helene Christensen, Anna Ancher and her daughter Helga.
Krøyer began developing the composition after a celebration in 1884. Photographs taken by the artist Fritz Stoltenberg helped inspire the arrangement, but Krøyer spent several years refining the scene before completing the painting in 1888.
Sunlight flashes across the leaves, white tablecloth and raised glasses. The vivid light and spontaneous atmosphere reflect the naturalism and plein-air painting associated with the Skagen artists, while the carefully arranged figures create a lasting portrait of their creative community.
