A summer garden in Skagen
Marie Krøyer stands among grasses and flowers, bending slightly as if to pick a bloom. Her pale dress catches the sunlight while short, lively brushstrokes dissolve the surrounding garden into patches of green, yellow and white.
The setting was the garden at Madam Bendsens Gaard on the outskirts of Skagen. P.S. and Marie Krøyer rented the house during the summers of 1891 to 1893, early in their marriage. The garden later appeared in several of Krøyer’s works, including Roses from 1893.
This painting belongs to a productive period in which Krøyer explored the changing atmosphere of Skagen. Instead of the blue evening light associated with many of his beach paintings, he worked here with direct sunlight and vibrant garden colour.
The original remained in private ownership for many years. After changing ownership in December 2024, it was deposited at Skagens Museum and placed on public display.
“Here Krøyer unfolds mood painting in the garden, giving the work a kinship with Roses, painted the following year.”
