Krøyer and Marie beneath the moon
P.S. Krøyer and Marie Krøyer walk slowly along the shoreline with their dog beside them. A sailing boat appears in the distance, while the moon casts a narrow reflection across the water. The figures occupy only part of the broad coastal landscape, giving the sea and evening sky a strong presence.
Krøyer was fascinated by the blue hour, when daylight lingers after sunset and the colours of the coast become muted. Here, pale clothing, moonlight and calm water are held together by closely balanced shades of blue and grey.
The painting is also a double portrait of two artists. Marie Krøyer had studied painting in Copenhagen and Paris before marrying Krøyer in 1889. In the picture, the couple appear close, yet each seems absorbed in the sea and the fading light.
The original belongs to the Hirschsprung Collection in Copenhagen. The museum’s close connection with Krøyer began through the artist’s lifelong friendship with collectors Heinrich and Pauline Hirschsprung.
“The light of the moon is reflected in the water as the couple look out across the silent sea.”
