Three girls on the bridge

A girl in a white dress faces the viewer while holding a broad yellow hat. Behind her, two companions in red and green dresses lean towards the railing and look across the water.

The figures appear close together, yet their poses create a sense of distance. The two girls with their backs turned seem absorbed by the harbour, while the girl in white meets the viewer with an expression that is difficult to read.

A dramatic perspective

The bridge runs diagonally through the composition, leading the eye from the foreground towards the upper right corner. Its railing creates a strong boundary between the girls and the dark water below.

A large black shape occupies much of the left side of the painting. Boats, reflections and the shoreline are reduced to broad areas of colour, giving the familiar harbour at Åsgårdstrand a dreamlike quality.

About Edvard Munch

Edvard Munch was born at Løten in 1863 and grew up in Christiania, now Oslo. His paintings and prints explored anxiety, desire, loneliness, illness and the emotional intensity of human relationships.

His radical use of colour, simplified forms and psychological subjects made him an important influence on twentieth-century expressionism. Munch died in Oslo in 1944.
