Bathing figures among the waves

Hans Dahl was born in Hardanger in 1849. He initially trained as an army officer but left the military in 1874 to pursue painting. His teachers included Johan Fredrik Eckersberg, Knud Bergslien and Hans Gude.

Dahl studied in Karlsruhe and Düsseldorf and exhibited internationally from the 1870s. He later lived in Berlin but returned to western Norway each summer to sketch the landscape. From 1919, he lived permanently in Balestrand beside the Sognefjord.

His paintings frequently show fjords, mountains, boats and people in brilliant sunlight. The cheerful figures and clear colours made his art highly popular with private collectors abroad, particularly in Germany.
