The five-petalled flower
No. 5 is the first of four purple paintings associated with adulthood. Moderna Museet draws attention to the pink five-petalled flower at the top of the painting. A similar flower appears in Hilma af Klint’s 1907 sketchbook with the names of the members of The Five, the spiritualist group to which she belonged.
The museum also explains that the flower may represent earth, fire, air and water together with a fifth element, the quintessence. In alchemical traditions, quintessence was understood as a concentration of the most essential parts of existence.
