Scandinavia unfolds across seas, borders and old place-names on this richly detailed map from the early 18th century.
Published in Nuremberg around 1730 by the cartographic house founded by Johann Baptist Homann, the map covers Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland together with the Baltic regions of Livonia, Latvia and Courland.
Cities, villages, roads, bridges, forests, castles and fortified places fill the map. The elaborate title cartouche is supported by angels and includes the French title Les Trois Couronnes du Nord, meaning The Three Crowns of the North.
Johann Baptist Homann died in 1724, but his publishing house continued under the name Homann Heirs. This map therefore belongs to the influential cartographic tradition that he established in Nuremberg.
The Nuremberg City Museum describes the Homann firm as “one of Europe’s most important map-printing houses” of the 18th century.
