Reading beneath the trees
Johan Krouthén painted Three Reading Women in a Summer Landscape in 1908. Its Swedish title is Tre läsande kvinnor i sommarlandskap. Rather than depicting a formal event, Krouthén focuses on a private moment shared outdoors.
The women are absorbed in their books, surrounded by tall grass and trees. Patches of sunlight across the ground give the painting its warm rhythm, while the relaxed figures make the scene feel natural and lived-in.
Krouthén was known for his bright landscapes, gardens and scenes of everyday life. He believed a painter should “paint nature skilfully and accurately at its best.” Read more about Johan Krouthén and his work.
