Details

Sweden, Norway and Denmark fill this detailed atlas map of Scandinavia from 1841, accompanied by a separate inset of Iceland.

The map was published in Edinburgh by Scottish engraver and publisher William Home Lizars. It appeared in the 1841 edition of Lizars’ Edinburgh Geographical General Atlas, a later edition of an atlas first published in 1826.

Coloured outlines distinguish political and administrative boundaries. Cities, roads, rivers, canals and mountain ranges cover the map, while hachures indicate changes in elevation. The prime meridian is measured from London, as was common on British maps before Greenwich became the internationally accepted standard.

The Iceland inset allows the island to be shown at a practical scale without reducing the detail across mainland Scandinavia. Together, the main map and inset offer a broad view of the Nordic region as it was represented by a Scottish publisher in the early Victorian period.

The David Rumsey Historical Map Collection describes the original as a “double page engraved hand colored in outline map” with relief shown by hachures.
