Blaeu, Bure and the mapping of the North
Joan Blaeu was one of the leading map publishers in 17th-century Amsterdam. His atlases combined geographical information with careful engraving, hand colouring and decorative composition.
According to the David Rumsey Historical Map Collection, this map was closely based on Anders Bure’s influential map of Sweden from 1626. Blaeu adapted that geographical foundation into a wider presentation of Scandinavia, placing Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland within one impressive composition.
“This map is closely based on Anders Bure’s 1626 map of Sweden.”
The print was clear and beautifully produced. Ordering was quick, and everything was as expected.
