Product text

One of the most famous early maps of the Nordic world. Rich in geography, myth, and Scandinavian identity.

Carta Marina et Descriptio Septentrionalium Terrarum, usually known simply as the Carta Marina, is one of the most important historical maps of Scandinavia. Created by Olaus Magnus and first published in 1539, it is described in the uploaded source as the first map of the Nordic countries to give details and place names. The map covers Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, and nearby regions, and combines geography with ships, sea creatures, and scenes from northern life.

This is a striking poster for anyone who loves Scandinavian history, Nordic design, and antique maps with real story value. It works beautifully in a study, hallway, office, living room, or gallery wall where you want something both decorative and meaningful.

What makes the Carta Marina special is that it is not only a map, but also a cultural document. The uploaded material notes that it includes mythical creatures, navigational elements, regional scenes, and detailed inscriptions, reflecting both Renaissance cartography and the folklore of the North. Its composition is centered on Scandia, with the Nordic lands presented in unusual detail for the period.

The original map was monumental in scale: about 1.70 m wide by 1.25 m tall, printed from nine woodcut blocks. It was created over roughly 12 years in Rome and first printed in Venice in 1539. The uploaded source also explains that the map later disappeared from public knowledge for centuries before copies were rediscovered in Munich and Switzerland/Uppsala.

For a home with a Nordic mood, this print offers more than decoration. It brings together history, mythology, cartography, and Scandinavian atmosphere in one image.

“The Carta Marina stands out as the first detailed map of the Nordic regions.”
