A quiet moment beside the fjord
The seated figure occupies the foreground, close to the water and the boat. Beyond her, the fjord leads the eye towards distant slopes and mountains. Dahl combines an intimate human scene with the scale of the western Norwegian landscape.

Fjord light and storytelling
Dahl was known for scenes in which landscape and human activity belong together. Boats, haymaking, mountain farms and figures in folk costume gave his paintings a recognisable Norwegian setting, while radiant sunshine made them immediately appealing.

About Hans Dahl
Hans Dahl was born in Hardanger in 1849. After completing military training, he served as an officer before leaving the army in 1874 to become a painter. His teachers included J.F. Eckersberg, Knud Bergslien, Hans Gude, Wilhelm Riefstahl, Eduard von Gebhardt and Wilhelm Sohn.
Dahl exhibited in Düsseldorf and at the 1876 Centennial Exhibition in Philadelphia. He lived in Berlin from 1888 to 1919 but returned to Norway each summer to make studies of western Norwegian scenery. He later settled in Balestrand beside the Sognefjord and died there in 1937.
