A thoughtful portrait of one of Norway’s pioneering female artists.
Harriet Backer painted The Artist Kitty Kielland in Paris in 1883. The portrait shows her close friend and fellow artist Kitty Kielland seated in an upholstered chair, composed and absorbed in thought. Backer avoids the usual symbols of an artist’s profession. Kielland’s character and presence carry the picture.
Backer and Kielland met in Munich and later shared homes and studios in Munich, Paris and Kristiania, now Oslo. Both became important figures in Norwegian art and helped make an artistic career more attainable for the women who followed them.
Two artists and lifelong friends
Kitty Kielland was best known for her landscapes, especially her paintings of the moors and summer nights of Jæren in western Norway. In Backer’s portrait, we meet the person behind those landscapes. Her thoughtful gaze and determined expression give the painting a quiet psychological depth.
