The final painting in The Ten Largest
No. 10 concludes Hilma af Klint’s monumental exploration of the human life cycle. The lively organic forms seen in the paintings of childhood, youth and adulthood have been reduced to a quieter arrangement of squares, lines, spirals and pale surfaces.
The composition feels open and meditative. Large geometric fields in red, blue and yellow appear against a light pink ground, while the generous empty areas give every symbol room to breathe.
Symbols gathered into a quieter form
Many signs from the earlier paintings return in a more restrained form. The grid, spirals and coloured geometry recall the visual language developed throughout the series, yet the final image is marked by balance and stillness.
Near the lower half of the painting is a small egg or droplet shape. Inside it, the larger composition is reflected in miniature through a delicate grid and tiny spirals. The form resembles a concentrated image of the series itself.
“The empty light surfaces create a harmonious calm.”
The horizontal eight and infinity
A horizontal figure eight appears among the painting’s symbols. Moderna Museet identifies it as a sign of infinity. Its continuous line suits a work concerned with the final stage of life while suggesting movement beyond a simple ending.
Together with the egg-shaped form and repeating spirals, the infinity symbol gives the painting a sense of continuity. Old age becomes a stage of gathering and reflection within a larger cycle.
Part of The Ten Largest
The Ten Largest consists of ten monumental paintings created in 1907. The series follows human life through childhood, youth, adulthood and old age. Hilma af Klint made the works for a planned spiritual temple, using scale, colour and symbols to surround the viewer.
No. 10 is the second painting devoted to old age and the final work in the sequence. Its calm geometry resolves many of the forms and contrasts introduced in the preceding nine paintings.
About Hilma af Klint
Hilma af Klint was born in Stockholm in 1862 and trained at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. Alongside traditional portraits and landscapes, she developed an extensive abstract body of work inspired by spiritual inquiry, natural science and symbolic systems.
Her large abstract paintings were created years before abstraction became widely established in European art. She requested that much of this work remain unseen until twenty years after her death, and it later became central to a broader understanding of modern art.
