A Summer Day in Kristiania

When Haldorsen painted the scene in 1907, Oslo was officially named Kristiania. The city returned to the name Oslo on 1 January 1925, as explained by Store norske leksikon.

The University’s classical façade stands prominently on the left, while Karl Johans gate leads into the centre of the composition. Studenterlunden provides a band of trees and greenery on the right. Small figures, carriages and flags turn the architectural view into a record of everyday city life.

About Karl Haldorsen

Karl Anton Haldorsen was born in Namsos in 1878 and died in Kristiania in 1911. He studied at the Royal Drawing School under Wilhelm Peters and Oscar Wergeland and was briefly a pupil of Erik Werenskiold.
