Low winter sunlight breaks through the trees of Charlottenlund Forest in this Danish landscape painted by Peder Mørk Mønsted in 1918. Snow covers the woodland path, while bare trunks and long blue-grey shadows frame the warm light beyond. The contrast between the cold forest floor and the golden sun gives the painting its distinctive atmosphere.

Winter sunlight beneath the trees
Mønsted places the viewer directly on a snow-covered route through the forest. Tracks and footprints cross the foreground before disappearing among the trees. The low sun is partly concealed behind a large trunk, allowing its warm light to spread through the branches and across the snow.
The scene is built from contrasts. Dark trunks stand against pale snow, cool shadows meet yellow sunlight, and the tightly grouped trees open towards a brighter space in the distance. Small changes in colour prevent the snow from appearing uniformly white. Cream, pale blue, violet and reflected gold give the surface depth.
Charlottenlund Forest near Copenhagen
Charlottenlund Forest lies north of Copenhagen in Gentofte. The woodland was once part of Ibstrup Deer Park, established by King Christian IV in 1622. In 1730, King Christian VI gave the forest to his sister Charlotte Amalie, whose name it has carried ever since.
“Until about 1825, the area was an open oak woodland, particularly known for its rich plant life.”

Premium matte art paper
The artwork is printed on heavyweight 200 gsm matte paper with a smooth, non-reflective surface. This finish preserves the subtle colours in the snow and the warm glow between the trees without distracting glare.
FSC-certified or equivalent paper is used, depending on the production location. Each poster is made when ordered and produced close to the delivery destination where possible.
Danish winter art for the home
The warm sunlight keeps this winter landscape from feeling cold or austere. It suits a living room, bedroom, hallway or reading corner and pairs naturally with oak, wool, linen and muted interior colours.
The print was clear and beautifully produced. Ordering was quick, and everything was as expected.
