Life inside a nineteenth-century tavern
The tavern is crowded with guests whose gestures, conversations and glances create several small stories within the larger scene. Eskilson invites the viewer to explore the room and notice how the people relate to one another.
Furniture, clothing and everyday objects help establish the period setting. The carefully arranged figures give the scene a theatrical quality without losing its sense of ordinary human life.
Swedish genre painting
Genre painters depicted recognisable scenes from daily life. Inns, farmhouses, workshops and family interiors gave artists an opportunity to study social behaviour as well as local customs and clothing.
Eskilson developed this approach while studying in Düsseldorf, where narrative painting was particularly influential. He worked for a period in the studio of Norwegian painter Adolph Tidemand, who was celebrated for his detailed portrayals of rural life.

About Per Eskilson
Per Eskilson was born in Billeberga in southern Sweden in 1820. He studied at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm before travelling to Düsseldorf in 1853.
He became known for anecdotal genre scenes drawn from Swedish life. Eskilson also worked as a photographer and was elected an associate member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts in 1866. His name also appears as Peter Eskilson and Peter Eskilsson.
