A summer night on Skagen Beach

The Sankt Hans bonfire has long marked midsummer in Denmark. Krøyer placed the celebration on Skagen Beach, where flames, smoke and gathered figures form a warm band of light against the darkening sea and sky.

Many people connected with the Skagen artists appear in the monumental composition. They include Anna and Michael Ancher, Holger Drachmann, Marie Krøyer, composer Hugo Alfvén and Krøyer’s daughter Vibeke. Local residents and fishermen complete the gathering.

Krøyer was especially interested in the changing light of Skagen after sunset. In this painting, the blue evening atmosphere surrounds the crowd while the fire illuminates faces and clothing. The combination gives the scene both intimacy and historical weight.

Completed only a few years before Krøyer’s death, the painting became his last large canvas. It preserves a vivid image of Skagen as an artistic community and a living coastal town.

“The great bonfire lights up the summer night as artists, fishermen and townspeople gather around the flames.”
