Wilhelm Bendz’s Christian IV on Trefoldigheden at the Battle of Kolberger Heide depicts the Danish king aboard his flagship during the naval battle against Sweden on 1 July 1644. Christian IV was struck by metal fragments and badly wounded, yet ordered his crew to continue fighting.

The battle itself ended without a decisive victor. The king’s actions, however, became part of Denmark’s national memory and inspired the opening of the Danish royal anthem, Kong Christian stod ved højen mast.

Bendz created this large history painting in 1828 after an earlier composition by Nicolai Abildgaard. The work is now in the collection of SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark.

As The Royal Danish Collection records, Christian IV was badly wounded but “ordered the crew to continue fighting.”
